Distribution is conducted on consignment, a variation of the open-account method of payment in which payment is remitted to the Organization only after the goods have been sold to the end customer. The distributor receives, manages, and sells the goods on the Organization's behalf; the Organization retains title until the moment of sale. Payment is required only for those items sold. Goods not sold within the agreed-upon period may be returned at cost, and generally are.

Consignment is, on its face, very risky: the goods are far from home, in the hands of an independent agent, and no payment is guaranteed. It is nevertheless preferred, on the basis of better availability and faster delivery, and because it reduces the direct costs of storing and managing inventory. The key is a reputable and trustworthy distributor. Appropriate insurance should be in place to cover consigned goods in transit. Members are asked to consider themselves consigned goods in transit, and to proceed accordingly to the entrance, where title is retained until the moment of admission.

Members should be aware of the demands that carriage places on the blends. Four problems are kept in mind when preparing a consignment: breakage, moisture, pilferage, and excess weight.

Blends travel in strong containers, adequately sealed and filled where possible, with the weight evenly distributed to provide proper bracing regardless of size. Refrigerated and liquid-bulk containers are readily available on the principal routes. Packing filler is made of moisture-resistant material. Straps, seals, and shrink-wrap safeguard the goods in transit.

To avoid pilferage, the contents and brand names are not written on the packages. Nothing is written on the packages. Transportation costs are determined by volume and weight; the blends have accordingly been developed to minimize both. Members not equipped to pack the goods themselves should engage a professional company. This service is usually provided at a moderate cost.
